We first decided to work remotely was on March.16. Who would have thought we will be still working remotely today, it is May.23.
When the hospital ship USNS Comfort came to New York City on March.30 to help many patients, we felt things will get better soon to get back to normal life.
Medical team aboard Comfort deployed from Norfolk, VA to support the domestic corona virus mission intended to ease pressures on local hospitals. As result, that was far fewer than public assumptions and expectations for the floating 1,000 beds which arrived just as New York City saw surges in infections and patients requiring intensive care level treatment.
Comfort treated a total of 182 patients over three and a half week period.
Local officials initially estimated that medical facilities would be slammed by COVID-19 infected patients and staffs on top of the normal caseloads they typically handle, further straining their resources such as limited ventilators and intensive care unit beds. But while some hospitals got inundated, stay home and social distancing orders resulted in many hospitals seeing fewer patients and the result was less demand from New York and New Jersey to have patients transferred to Comfort for care.
Comfort had the extra capacity- if it was needed- and fortunately it wasn't needed.
So this is a BIG WIN for everyone!
Now Comfort left port of New York City and we feel things has seen sign of recovery, especially outside of New York City.
As for business perspective, we need to get back to work immediately, but we should not rush back into where it was to face the risk of 2nd wave.
We have lived, learned and sacrificed ourselves for over 2 months and let's make sure we will not let us go through this again.
We simply can not afford anymore of this.
