More possible big earth-quake in Japan?

Japan Meteorological Agency maintains mega-quake advisory for Nankai Trough

The Japan Meteorological Agency continues to urge caution against a possible mega-quake in the Nankai Trough along the Pacific coast.

The agency says no irregular changes have so far been observed in the crustal strain.

A special advisory was issued for the first time on Thursday after a magnitude 7.1 tremor struck off Miyazaki Prefecture in southern Japan.

The quake caused tsunami that reached the coasts of Kyushu and Shikoku islands. A 50-centimeter tsunami was observed at a port in Miyazaki City.

On land, the tremor registered a maximum intensity of lower 6 on the Japanese scale of 0 to 7 in Nichinan City.

Intensities of upper 5 were registered in parts of Miyazaki and neighboring Kagoshima prefectures.

As of 2 p.m. Friday, more than 10 perceptible jolts were observed in the region, including one with a magnitude of 5.3 early in the morning.

The Meteorological Agency says the probability of a major earthquake in the Nankai Trough is higher than usual. It issued the special advisory urging caution under what is known as the Nankai Trough Earthquake Extra Information protocol.

Agency officials say the advisory does not mean that a quake will definitely strike within a certain timeframe. But they have asked 707 municipalities in 29 prefectures -- extending from around Tokyo in the east to Okinawa in the south -- to check their disaster preparedness.

The government is advising people to secure furniture, and to check evacuation sites and ways to confirm the safety of their family members.

Households with infants, the elderly and people with disabilities are being advised to consider evacuating voluntarily.

SPERRY BY TODD SNYDER

After falling overboard in 1934 in the Long Island Sound, Paul Sperry — an avid sailor, inventor and intrepid explorer — created the first non-slip deck shoe, modeling the sole after his cocker spaniel's foot pad. And in World War II, it became the official deck shoe of the US Navy. Since then, it’s been worn by style icons like JFK, Paul Newman, and Mister Rogers. And in the same way that the Stan Smith went from an unassuming white court shoe to a fashion fave circa 2014, it is now the Top-Sider’s time to shine. Todd’s limited-editions bring a modern, luxe spin to the seafaring classic.

Strong/weak Japanese yen?

Since we talk about the exchange rate so often and affect on your business and/or your trip between Japan and US, let's go through the meanings behind what is a strong /weak Japanese yen?

A strong yen refers to a state where the relative value of the yen against other currencies is high. In other words, when the yen is strong, more units of other currencies can be exchanged per unit of yen. Conversely, a weak yen refers to a state where the relative value of the yen against other currencies is low (fewer units of other currencies can be exchanged per unit of yen).

For example, a Japanese tourist converts 10,000 yen to U.S. dollars for shopping in Hawaii. When the exchange rate is 1 USD = 100 JPY, the tourist will receive 100 U.S. dollars, which is calculated by dividing 10,000 by 100. However, if the exchange rate is 1 USD = 80 JPY, the tourist will receive 125 U.S. dollars (10,000 divided by 80). Furthermore, if the exchange rate is 1 USD = 125 JPY, the tourist will receive 80 U.S. dollars (10,000 divided by 125). When the exchange rate is 1 USD = 80 JPY, more U.S. dollars can be obtained for the same amount of yen than when the rate is 1 USD = 100 JPY, which indicates a stronger yen. In contrast, when the exchange rate is 1 USD = 125 JPY, fewer U.S. dollars can be obtained for the same amount of yen than when the rate is 1 USD = 100 JPY, which indicates a weaker yen.

Earthquakes around the world

After surprising shakes occurred in New York City in early April, it seems continuing shakes around the world. Now big ones in Taiwan.

An aftershock is usually a smaller earthquake that follows a larger one in the same general area. Aftershocks are typically minor adjustments along the portion of a fault that slipped at the time of the initial earthquake.

But aftershocks can occur days, weeks or even years after the first earthquake and these events can be of equal or larger magnitude to the initial earthquake, and they can continue to affect already damaged locations.

What should I do DURING an earthquake?

● If you are INDOORS -- STAY THERE! Get under a desk or table and hang on to it (Drop, Cover, and Hold on!) or move into a hallway or against an inside wall. STAY CLEAR of windows, fireplaces, and heavy furniture or appliances. GET OUT of the kitchen, which is a dangerous place (things can fall on you). DON'T run downstairs or rush outside while the building is shaking or while there is danger of falling and hurting yourself or being hit by falling glass or debris.

● If you are OUTSIDE -- get into the OPEN, away from buildings, power lines, chimneys, and anything else that might fall on you.

● If you are DRIVING -- stop, but carefully. Move your car as far out of traffic as possible. DO NOT stop on or under a bridge or overpass or under trees, light posts, power lines, or signs. STAY INSIDE your car until the shaking stops. When you RESUME driving, watch for breaks in the pavement, fallen rocks, and bumps in the road at bridge approaches.

● If you are in a MOUNTAINOUS AREA -- watch out for falling rock, landslides, trees, and other debris that could be loosened by quakes.

● If you are near the OCEAN - see these safety rules from NOAA's Tsunami Warning Center.

Earthquake in New York City

A magnitude-4.8 earthquake rumbled through the northeastern United States at 10:23 a.m. on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey, sending tremors from Philadelphia to Boston and jolting buildings in Manhattan and throughout the five boroughs.

The U.S.G.S. reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was near Whitehouse Station, N.J., about 40 miles west of New York City. The agency estimated the depth of the bedrock rupture at 2.9 miles. In nearby Lebanon, N.J., china plates rattled in diners and frightened residents darted into streets to find trees, cars and the ground shaking.

The earthquake was not a rarity for the New York area — numerous small temblors go unnoticed every year, geologists say — but its strength and intensity unsettled a region more accustomed to flooded roadways and snow-covered sidewalks than trembling walls.

Several minor aftershocks were reported in New Jersey in the hours afterward, including one with a magnitude of 2.2 that struck at 1:32 p.m. near the original quake’s epicenter, according to the U.S.G.S.

Taylor Swift

The longest Super Bowl game will also go down as the most-watched program in U.S. television history. Kansas City's 25-22 overtime victory over San Francisco on Sunday night averaged 123.4 million viewers across television and streaming platforms. But fell short of the 150 million-plus viewers for 1969 moon landing as the most-watched broadcast program in history.

Recent Super Bowl shows has been hitting high viewers every year and this year seems more special to many Americans having super celebrity like Taylor Swift looked down her boyfriend playing.

I am terrified about her influence to our society today and she is still 34 years old and keeping her calm.

Congrats to Kansas City Chiefs but true winner is Taylor Swift herself. She captured everyone's attention nicely.
