FIELD NOTE #11 Snoopy in Style NYC

今回のField Noteでは、New Yorkで開催されていた「Snoopy in Style NYC」へ行ってきました!In this Field Note, we visited “Snoopy in Style NYC” in New York!

Snoopy is a character that almost everyone has seen at some point, but this exhibition allowed us to see Snoopy not simply as a comic character, but through its relationship with fashion, culture, and creativity.

The exhibition brought together archival pieces, fashion, design, and one-of-a-kind Snoopy and Woodstock figures dressed in custom creations by designers.

My first impression entering the exhibition was how naturally Snoopy fit into the world of fashion.

Snoopy itself has such a simple and recognizable form. Just a few lines are enough to immediately tell us who he is. Because of that simplicity, the character can be transformed in so many different ways without losing its identity.

What I found interesting was that the exhibition was not simply about dressing Snoopy in fashionable clothes.

Each designer seemed to use Snoopy as a kind of canvas. The familiar character became a starting point for exploring different ideas of fashion, craftsmanship, identity, and culture.

As a result, each piece felt completely different while still sharing the same familiar Snoopy as its starting point.

Looking at the different versions of Snoopy, I started thinking about what makes a character timeless.

Snoopy first appeared in the Peanuts comic strip in 1950, but the character has continued to appear across fashion, sports, music, art, and popular culture.

A character created more than 70 years ago can still be interpreted in completely new ways today. That ability to adapt without losing its original identity felt like one of the most interesting things about the exhibition.

Another thing that stood out to me was seeing Snoopy and Woodstock wearing creations from different brands.

KITH and Madhappy, both brands that our company works with, had created custom pieces specifically for Snoopy and Woodstock.

Seeing them actually wearing those designs was especially memorable for me.

It was also interesting to see how pieces that we normally see as fashion items took on a different feeling once they became part of Snoopy’s world.

The exhibition also reminded me that the relationship between Snoopy and fashion is not something new.

In 1990, an exhibition at the Louvre in Paris featured Snoopy designs by major fashion houses including Chanel, Hermès, Dior, Armani, and Givenchy.

Seeing that history alongside the contemporary creations in New York made it interesting to think about how Snoopy has continued to be interpreted through fashion over the years.

What surprised me most, however, was the line outside the exhibition.

At its busiest, the wait could be around 3 hours, which made me realize just how much attention the exhibition was attracting and how loved Snoopy is.

The exhibition also offered several interactive experiences, including photo booths and a listening room.

Visitors could take photos, listen to music, and experience Snoopy in different ways, making the exhibition feel more like an immersive experience than simply walking through a gallery.

There was also a selection of Snoopy merchandise available at the exhibition, including apparel such as sweatshirts, sweets and make-up stuff, as well as other Snoopy-themed items.

The simplicity that Snoopy has may be one of the reasons why Snoopy can continue to be reinterpreted by different designers and loved by different generations.

He has become a character that can connect different generations, designers, and cultures while still remaining unmistakably Snoopy.
