ANIME NYC, the East Coast's largest anime convention, was held over four days starting on Thursday, August 20th, at the Javits Center, Manhattan's massive event venue. We headed there on the afternoon of the first weekday to experience the excitement.
On the subway ride to the venue, We could already see cosplayers dressed in their unique, self-chosen outfits. Their numbers increased as we neared the Javits Center, and despite the early hour on a weekday, the area around the venue was already packed with people everywhere. Attendees were enjoying cosplay in their own style, featuring characters from immensely popular series in America like Demon Slayer, NARUTO, ONE PIECE, Chainsaw Man, and Jujutsu Kaisen, as well as niche characters we might not have recognized. Outside the venue, strangers were calling out to each other, resulting in impromptu photo sessions and live broadcasts on social media. There was an open and free atmosphere where people who loved the same culture instantly connected.
The vast venue, which utilized the entire Javits Center, was bustling, with large and small booths crammed together, making it difficult to walk straight through the aisles. Particularly prominent were large booths, such as Kinokuniya Bookstore's event shop, Shueisha's "Manga Million" project booth, Kodansha's merchandise booths promoting BLUE LOCK and Attack on Titan, and the special Chainsaw Man official merchandise booth. Countless smaller shops lined up around these official booths, forming an energetic marketplace where the official and unofficial mixed together.
From a fashion perspective, what I found particularly interesting was the sheer number of street-style merchandise booths selling graphic T-shirts and caps. People constantly swarmed the booths where graphics were printed onto the body of the shirt and sold on the spot, which I felt was an interesting sales method that blended culture with a DIY spirit. Apparel products were overwhelmingly dominated by graphic T-shirts, perhaps due to factors like accessibility, ease of processing, and cost, but there were also some more elaborate items like outerwear being sold. A varsity jacket with Yu Yu Hakusho appliqués and embroidery especially caught my eye. I believe that if they focused more on the fabric and sewing to create quality that people could cherish for longer, they could reach a wider audience.
Furthermore, reflecting the recent global trading card boom, many booths for card collectors, featuring Pokémon cards and Yu-Gi-Oh!, were highly successful. Some displayed premium cards valued at over $1,000, with collectors earnestly assessing the merchandise.
As I walked through the venue, I realized that anime culture transcends mere entertainment and has been elevated into the realm of art and design. The "Artist Alley," where individual creators displayed and sold their works, was filled with illustrators of various styles. Posters and zines, reinterpreted with unique perspectives, were displayed wall-to-wall. Also impressive were the oversized tapestries featuring anime characters or Weekly Shonen Jump cover designs. The use of color and graphic composition was sophisticated, creating an ambiance that would make you want to hang them in your room as an interior accent. The affordable price point, around $70, made them so attractive that I found myself considering purchasing one.
What I found intriguing was the booth for Heritage Auctions, a major American auction house globally known for fine art and comic auctions. In recent years, they have been regularly hosting an anime-specific auction called "The Art of Anime," and their new member registration booth showcased past auction records. I witnessed the enthusiastic market value of "anime art" as contemporary art and investment assets, including records of Studio Ghibli cel art from works like My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke being successfully bid on for tens of thousands of dollars per piece (over 5 million to 8 million JPY), and rare original drawings from AKIRA and Dragon Ball. It was understandable why people walking through the venue were carrying large paper bags filled with massive amounts of purchased goods; it demonstrated the boundless love and overwhelming purchasing power of anime and manga fans.
This was a world I rarely intersected with in my usual work in lifestyle and fashion, but stepping into it, I found it to be surprisingly deep and vast, with an openness that embraced everyone. In America, it is considered very cool to wholeheartedly pursue one's values and passions, and to express them proudly. ANIME NYC, filled with people who were cloaked in their favorite characters and who spared no passion or investment for the culture they loved, was undoubtedly one of the most energetic spots in NY right now, and a stimulating place to feel the global reach and fervor of anime culture. I felt like I glimpsed a different side of NYC, entirely separate from the fashion scene.
