On June 1, 2025, absolute te-ma & company proudly celebrates its 20th anniversary. This milestone is a testament to the invaluable guidance and support we have received over the years. On behalf of our entire team, I extend our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering encouragement and support.
It feels
like just yesterday, arrived in New York City at the end of
1999. Two and a half decades have flown by in the blink of an eye. After
completing my high school and university education in the United States, I
returned to Japan to work for a publicly listed retail company for about seven
years before joining my family’s business. During that time, I was involved in
branding and marketing for international apparel brands, managing their
operations within Japan. These experiences fueled my desire to engage in global
business in the fashion industry. It wasn’t long before I made the bold
decision to relocate to New York City, the epicenter of the fashion world. Acting on
my determination, I immediately sought advice from someone who had supported me
during my time as a student in the U.S., and decided to learn the fundamentals
of the apparel trade under their guidance. Armed with a work visa, I made the
move to New York City.
The journey of the past 25 years has been far from smooth, marked by numerous twists and turns. One unforgettable moment came during my first year in New York City when the 9/11 terrorist attacks occurred. It was the height of New York Fashion Week, and I found myself guiding visiting clients from Japan to safety amidst the chaos. Watching the collapse of the World Trade Center on TV after making it home on foot drove home the gravity of the situation and the terror of living in a city under attack. Despite contemplating a return to Japan for the sake of my family, my resolve to build a business in New York remained steadfast.
Years passed swiftly, and I was presented with an unexpected opportunity when the president of my then-employer offered me the chance to take over the company. While I deeply appreciated the offer, my dream of establishing my own business took precedence. Ultimately, I proposed an acquisition plan, which was graciously accepted. This marked a pivotal moment, occurring five years into my life in New York.
With a modest office shared between myself, my wife, and one employee, absolute te-ma & company was born. Within a month of launching, we were fortunate to receive a buying support offer from a major apparel company. This marked the beginning of a series of fruitful ventures. One notable client, led by a renowned buyer, grew into a globally recognized select shop. Through this partnership, we built valuable relationships with various brands and gained significant industry experience. These endeavors laid the foundation for us to receive numerous buying agreements from select shops and department stores. As our relationships with dynamic New York-based brands deepened, we began to provide consulting services for their global strategies, including entry into the Japanese market.
Navigating projects that spanned different business customs and cultures was not without its challenges, but witnessing long queues at the grand openings of our clients’ shops brought immense satisfaction to our team. My dream of making a global impact in business has steadily become a reality.
As we celebrate this 20th anniversary, I reflect on how fortunate we have been to work with exceptional clients, brands, and employees. Our journey has been enriched by the talented and diverse Japanese professionals who call New York home. I am endlessly grateful to everyone who has contributed to our success.
Amid rapidly changing global circumstances, this milestone marks a time for reflection and progress. We are committed to enhancing our current projects while anticipating future trends to better serve our clients. Looking ahead to the next five or ten years, we aim to take on new challenges and continue evolving as a company. Most of all, I am genuinely excited about what lies ahead for absolute te-ma & company.

te-ma & companyは2025年6月1日をもって20周年を迎える事が出来ました。これもひとえに皆様のご指導ご鞭撻の賜物です。この場を借りまして、長年にわたる皆さまのサポートに、スタッフ一同深く感謝申し上げます。
代表であります、私、髙久達也がニューヨークに参りましたのが、1999年の年末。早いもので四半世紀があっという間に過ぎました。高校・大学とアメリカで学び、帰国後、上場小売り企業で約7年勤務した後に、家業に関わりました。その際には、海外アパレルブランドのブランディングやマーケティングなどの業務に携わり海外ブランドを日本国内で運営する仕事を通して、ファッション業界でグローバルなビジネスをしたいという気持ちが膨らんでいきました。それから一念発起し、ファッション業界の中心地であるニューヨークに移住するまでにさほどの時間は掛かりませんでした。思い立ったら吉日、まずは、現地に飛び、アメリカ留学時からお世話になっていた方に相談にのっていただき、その方の元でアパレル商社の業務を基本から学ぶことに即決定。就労ビザを取得し、いざニューヨークへ！
四半世紀の道のりは、平坦な道のりではなく、沢山の紆余曲折がありました。特に、渡米1年目で同時多発テロが発生したことは忘れられない出来事のひとつです。ニューヨーク・ファッションウィークの真っただ中で起こった未曽有の事件に、私は日本から出張にきていたクライアントを誘導し安全を確保するために奔走。徒歩で自宅に帰り着いた時に、あっけなく崩壊する世界貿易センターの映像をテレビで見て、やっと事の重大さを知り、自分の住んでいる街がテロの標的になっているという恐怖におののきました。正直、家族のことを考えると、帰国するという選択も頭をよぎりました。しかし、「ニューヨークこそが、起業する場所である」という、私の決心は揺るぎませんでした。
数年があっという間に過ぎ、当時勤めていた会社の社長から、会社を継がないかという思ってもみない打診を頂きました。ありがたいお話でしたが、「自分で起業する」ことにこわだわり、最終的には吸収合併という案を出させていただき、快諾いただくことができ。これが、渡米後5年を過ぎて訪れた大きなチャンス！
小さなオフィスに机を並べて、私達夫婦＋社員１のabsolute te-ma & company がスタート。
独立してからは、一ヶ月も経たないうちに大手アパレル会社より、買付サポートのオファーを頂き、幸運なスタートを切る事が出来ました。名物バイヤーがディレクションした同ショップは、世界的に知名度のあるセレクトショップとなり、この取り組みを通して、弊社も様々なブランドとの出会いや貴重なビジネス上の経験を積むことができました。そして、バイングオフィス・アパレル商社として、多くのセレクトショップや百貨店から買い付け業務提携のオファーを頂く礎となったのです。多くの勢いのあるニューヨークブランドとの深いリレーションシップの中で、日本市場を含むブランドのグローバル戦略に関する相談がもたらされるようになり、バイイングオフィス・アパレル商社という業務に、グローバル戦略に関するコンサルティング業務が加わっていきました。名だたる米ブランドと共に日本での市場チャンスを見付け、試行錯誤しながらビジネスのストラクチャーを構築してショップのオープンに漕ぎつく。２つの異なる商習慣、カルチャーの中でプロジェクトを進めることの苦労は少ないとはいえませんが、ショップオープンの当日に長い行列ができたという報告を聞くことが、私とスタッフにこの上ない達成感をもたらしました。「グローバルなビジネスを生業としたい」という私の夢は着実にかなって今日に至ります。
20周年を迎え思うことは、弊社は、クライアントやブランドはもちろん、従業員にも恵まれてきたということ。さまざまな事情や夢を抱いてニューヨークに住んでいる日本人のスタッフたちとともに、ここまで前進してこれたこと、弊社に関わったすべての人々には感謝の気持ちしかありません。
世界情勢が大きく変わっていく中で迎える20年の節目。我々は今抱えているプロジェクトを大切にしながら、更に時代の趨勢を読んで進化し、クライアントの皆様にお役に立てる仕事をできると信じています。会社として5年後、10年後を見据えて新たな挑戦もしていきたと考えています。何より、absolute te-ma & company の未来にワクワクしている自分自身が居ることを嬉しく感じている所存です。
今までお世話になりました皆様に、改めて感謝申し上げます。今後 とも 変わらぬご愛顧を賜りますようお願い申し上げます。
