FIELD NOTE #12 KODANSHA HOUSE

Kodansha, Japan’s leading comprehensive publishing house with over a century of history, hosted a pop-up event called "KODANSHA HOUSE" in Manhattan’s Hudson Yards.

First held in New York in 2024 and 2025, "KODANSHA HOUSE" expanded to Los Angeles in July 2026 to coincide with Anime Expo. This year, the event returned once again to New York!

Marking its third occurrence in New York, this edition featured an expanded venue and a significantly larger selection of featured titles, presenting an updated experience for visitors.

Even though we visited around 6:00 PM on a weekday, the venue was filled with about 50 manga fans. Popular booths had long lines, giving us a firsthand sense of how popular manga has become in New York.

In the United States, Japanese manga is no longer seen as just a subculture, but as a recognized art form. In fact, manga exhibitions are frequently held in art museums across the country. While it was once a culture driven primarily by a niche group of dedicated fans, it is now widely enjoyed by a broader audience, especially among young people.

The venue, Hudson Yards in Manhattan, is located just north of Chelsea—a district known for hosting some of the world's leading contemporary art galleries—making it a prominent area that attracts trend-conscious youth and international tourists alike.

October is also a peak season in New York for major art and fashion events. By choosing this sophisticated location and timing, the event demonstrated a clever strategy aimed at reaching beyond core manga fans to connect with a broader audience interested in art, design, and culture.

Additionally, being just a five-minute walk from the Javits Center—the venue for New York Comic Con 2026, one of North America’s largest pop culture events held during the same period—drew large crowds of visiting anime and manga fans, keeping the space filled with incredible energy.

Inside, the venue was packed with interactive exhibits thoughtfully designed to let visitors experience the world of manga in a variety of engaging ways beyond traditional displays.

A "60th Anniversary Wall" celebrating six decades of Kodansha's presence in the US displayed high-quality reproduction prints from some of the publisher's most iconic manga series.

At the BLUE LOCK interactive booth, visitors could play a penalty shootout game against a holographic AI goalkeeper. Shot videos and scores were displayed and ranked in real time on giant screens, allowing participants to take home video recordings of their own gameplay.

Other popular attractions included an Attack on Titan diorama booth where fans could pose as Titans, and a photo area featuring the world's only official Kaneda's bike from AKIRA, which visitors could actually sit on.

The exhibit for Witch Hat Atelier stood out with its beautifully detailed set decoration, offering an interactive activity where visitors could try drawing magic circles from the story.

There was also a dedicated photo booth where fans could take pictures alongside characters from The Ghost in the Shell.

In one corner of the venue, a comfortable lounge area with sofas was set up for visitors to relax and read. A wide variety of English-translated manga was available to read freely. Rather than just showcasing artwork, creating a relaxed space to discover new titles provided a wonderful opportunity to introduce unfamiliar works to both existing fans and new readers.

The venue hosted a variety of daily events, and on the day we visited, "J-POP NIGHT" was taking place. J-POP tracks and popular anime opening themes played from the central DJ booth, creating a lively atmosphere where fans danced and enjoyed music videos on screen.

A free distribution area offered graphic art prints formatted like single manga pages. Designed with an aesthetic quality that made you want to frame and hang them on your wall, it served as a thoughtful souvenir for visitors to take home as a keepsake.

The retail section was bustling, drawing long lines of fans eager to purchase a wide variety of merchandise, including T-shirts and stationery.

From immersive exhibition spaces to interactive experience booths, 'KODANSHA HOUSE' offered a place to experience the world of manga with all five senses. Set in a diverse city like New York, it was a compelling event that presented an innovative way to connect works with their audience.
